Mavs' Season Ends at Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Omaha women's basketball team's season came to an end on Saturday with an 89-76 loss at Fort Wayne at the Gates Sports Center.

The Mavericks finished the season at 12-16 overall and 4-10 in the Summit League. The Mavs - the youngest team in the Summit League - went 3-4 in the second half of the league slate after a 1-6 start to league play.  IPFW finished the regular season 15-13 overall and 8-6 in league play.

Taijhe Kelly had 21 points to lead the Mavs. Senior Ericka House, playing the final game of her career, had 20 points. Mikaela Shaw had 18 points and five rebounds.

Fort Wayne hit 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the first half to pull away to a 47-31 halftime lead. The Mavericks built a 12-9 lead with 14:10 left in the half thanks to four straight baskets by Kelly and a House drive and finish off the glass. But IPFW caught fire and went on a 13-1 run to take a 22-13 lead by the 8:30 mark. Three different Mastodons - Amanda Hyde, Haley Seibert and Arial Simmons - each had 13 points in the half.

The Mavs cut it to 13 points, 55-42, on five straight points by Shaw, but IPFW pushed the lead to as many as 23 midway through the half. However, Omaha didn't quit, pulling back within 80-67 with 4:24 left.

Omaha finished 24-of-48 from the floor (50.0 percent) and 4-of-10 from 3-point range (40.0 percent). IPFW went 26-of-57 overall (45.6 percent) and 14-of-23 from long distance (60.9 percent). Seibert had 23 points for IPFW. Simmons had 22 and Hyde had 20.

Kelly was 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-5 on free throws for UNO. House shot 7-of-14 with a 4-for-4 day at the line, and Shaw was 4-of-9 overall and 9-of-10 on free throws. The Mavs as a team shot 88.9 percent (24-of-27) from the stripe. But they couldn't gain much of an edge on IPFW in that category, as the Mastodons were 23-of-26 (88.5 percent).
