GRAND FORKS, N.D.—The Omaha women's tennis team got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon, but faltered late in a 5-2 loss at North Dakota. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 1-5 (0-0 Summit League), while the UND improves to 4-5 (0-0 Big Sky).
The Mavs claimed the doubles point, winning in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. At No. 2, sophomores Molly Matricardi and Tiffany Hottman bested Stephanie Biehn and Faith Lee, 8-7 (7-5). At No. 3, freshmen Kenzie Hill and Hylan Miller recorded their first win together, defeating Lacey Sprinkel and Faith Lee, 8-5.
Momentum stayed on the Mavs' side early in singles as well. Senior Alex Tran recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Stephanie Petsis at No. 1. That win, however, was the last victory of the day for UNO, as North Dakota won the remaining five singles matches. Hill battled hard at No. 4, dropping a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Biehn, while senior Lindsay Weideman also competed in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 loss at No. 5.
The Mavericks are back in action at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 3, when they face in-state foe Doane College. The match starts a stretch of four straight home contests for the Mavs, all at Hanscom-Brandeis Tennis Center.
