SAN ANTONIO -
Allie Mathewson's RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning jumpstarted a three-run inning as the Mavericks posted a 4-1 win over UTSA in the final game at the UTSA Mid-Major Classic.
The Mavericks (11-3) went a perfect 5-0 at the tournament to take the title and have now won seven in a row.
Omaha got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning when
Campbell Ditto homered for the Mavs' first hit of the game. But UTSA (7-8) came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run by Megan Low to tie it 1-1.
The Roadrunners threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but
Dana Elsasser worked masterfully around a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Elsasser got Siera Sproul to ground to
Sydney Hames at third base, who threw home for a force out. Elsasser then got the Mavs out of the jam with another grounder to Hames.
In the top of the eighth,
Megan Stegman was placed on second base.
Tara Trede advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt, then
Allie Mathewson tripled down the right field line for a 2-1 lead. After
Lia Mancuso walked, Ditto singled to center field to score Mathewson to make it 3-1.
Amber Lutmer concluded her big weekend with a single up the middle to score Mancuso and make it 4-1. The hit extended her reached-base streak to 47 games.
Elsasser finished off the win to improve to 8-1, allowing one earned run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Mavericks visit Orlando, Fla., next weekend for the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic.
