Lutmer Powers Mavs to Big Wins at UTSA Tournament

SAN ANTONIO - Amber Lutmer blasted the Omaha softball team to a pair of decisive wins on Saturday at the UTSA Mid-Major Classic.

The Mavs topped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 12-6, and Bryant 14-5 (5 inn.) to improve to 4-0 at the tournament and 10-3 overall with their sixth straight win. The Mavs have reached double-digit runs in four of their last five games.

Lutmer, who was up most of the night suffering from an illness, went 7-for-8 on the day with three home runs, including her third grand slam of the season and second of the weekend. She tallied 12 RBI on the day and scored five runs.

UNO closes play at the tournament on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against UTSA.

Omaha 12, A&M-Corpus Christ 6
Amber Lutmer crushed two home runs and had seven RBI to help the Mavs to their fifth straight win. Mara Eeman was 2-for-4 with her second home run of the tournament, and Lia Mancuso went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Dana Elsasser earned her third win in three games for the Mavs to improve to 7-1. She allowed 12 hits and three earned runs, as two Maverick errors helped the Islanders score their other three runs in the game.

A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, but a three-run homer by Lutmer in the bottom half tied the game again at 3-3.

A six-run fourth inning for UNO proved to be the difference. Eeman began it with a solo home run, and Allie Mathewson added an RBI single, Mancuso an RBI groundout and Lutmer an RBI single. Lizzie Noble capped the inning with a two-run double to left field to make it 9-3.

After the Islanders cut it to 9-5 in the top of the sixth, Lutmer hit a three-run bomb after Mancuso and Campbell Ditto singled to start the bottom of the sixth.

The Mavericks pounded out 14 hits in the game. Tara Trede had two hits and scored twice.

Omaha 14, Bryant 5 (5 inn.)
The Mavs broke open a 5-5 game with a nine-run fourth inning to end the game by run rule after five innings.

Lizzie Noble (2-0) made her first career start and pitched the whole game, allowing just six hits and two earned runs with one walk and three stikeouts. Like the first game of the day, errors cost the Mavericks, as three mistakes led to three of Bryant's five runs.

Lutmer went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, five total RBI and two runs. Sydney Hames was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Mara Eeman was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, as the Mavs busted out 15 hits. Noble contributed to her own cause, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and RBI.

With the game tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Mavs exploded. Ditto, Lutmer and Noble singled to load the bases, setting up Hames to hit a two-run double down the left field line. After a pitching change, Eeman singled home two more runs. After two outs and a Tara Trede single, Lia Mancuso walked to load the bases. Ditto, batting for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch to bring home Eeman, then Lutmer smashed her third grand slam of the young season into center field for the 14-5 lead. It was the 41st homer of her career, moving her within three of Leslie Svoboda's all-time mark of 44 homers. Lutmer's 12 RBI on the day moved her into a tie for second in school history with 158 for her career. She needs 35 to pass Svoboda.

Noble finished the game with a strike out and two groundouts after allowing a leadoff single. All but one Maverick who played in the game scored a run.
