Box Score OMAHA, Neb. –
Jake Guentzel scored with 20.8 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Omaha hockey team a 3-3 tie with Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks extended their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) and are now 11-4-3 overall heading into the holiday break. The Chargers overall record is 3-14-3.
Guentzel's goal capped off a wild third period. The Mavericks trailed 2-0 but drew to within 2-1 when
Austin Ortega scored on a power play at 5:08.
But just 14 seconds later, the Chargers retook the two-goal lead.
Ryan Massa, who started the third period in place of starter
Brock Crossthwaite, jumped out to cover a loose puck, but it was poked away by UAH's Jeff Vanderlugt right to teammate Alex Carpenter. He fired it into the vacated net for his second goal of the year.
But Ortega struck again on a power play. He flipped in the rebound of a chance by
Ian Brady for his team-leading 11th goal of the season to make it 3-2.
That set the stage for Guentzel's heroics.
Dominic Zombo won a face-off in the right corner. Guentzel gathered it in and fired a wrist shot under the crossbar past goaltender Carmine Guerriero for his sixth goal of the year.
After a scoreless overtime, the two teams held a shootout that did not count toward the standings. The Mavericks won, 1-0, in three rounds with Guentzel delivering the only goal.
Massa made nine saves in relief, his biggest a sprawling stacked-pad save on Jack Prince with the Mavericks still trailing by a goal. He is now 9-3-3 on the season. Guerriero made 29 saves for the Chargers.
The Chargers entered the game with a six-game losing streak but broke open a scoreless game in the second period with a pair of powerplay goals. Jack Prince scored with one second remaining on a slashing penalty to
Brian Cooper at 5:32. Max McHugh then beat Crossthwaite with a shot off the post at 11:48.
Snuggerud and Zombo each finished with two assists. The Mavericks were 2-for-7 on the power play while Alabama-Huntsville was 2-for-5.
The Mavericks are off until Dec. 30-31 when they host New Hampshire of Hockey East.
