Box Score OMAHA, Neb. –
Kirk Thompson made 24 saves to pick up his second win of the season as the Omaha hockey team beat Alabama-Huntsville, 2-1, on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Mavericks won their season-high fourth straight game to improve to 11-4-2 overall while the Chargers dropped to 3-14-2. The series concludes on Sunday at 5:07 p.m.
The Mavericks took the lead late in the first period. With UAH's Matt Salhany in the penalty box,
Brian Cooper took a pass from
Tyler Vesel and fired a shot through a crowd. The puck seemed to deflect off a Charger defenseman and past goaltender Carmine Guerriero. The powerplay goal was the fourth of the year for Cooper, a career best.
The Chargers kept the game close through a scoreless second period, but the Mavericks finally doubled their lead in the third. Just after a power play had expired, Vesel spotted
Justin Parizek alone on the right wing in the UAH zone. Parizek took a couple of strides before wiring a shot past Guerriero for his eight goal of the year.
Thompson was solid in his first start since Nov. 8 at Ohio State. He lost his shutout bid with just 11 seconds remaining in the game when Jeff Vanderlugt scored in traffic with Guerriero pulled for an extra attacker. Thompson is now 2-1-0 this season.
The Mavericks outshot the Chargers, 31-25. They went 1-for-4 on the power play while holding the Chargers without a goal on two chances.
