Mavs Look to Win Third Straight

THE  GAME

The Omaha women's basketball team welcomes Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE to the Sapp Fieldhouse at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.

THE TEAMS

Omaha (5-4, 0-0 Summit League) is fresh off an 80-68 win over CSU Bakersfield and has won three of their last four games.

SIUE (2-5, 0-0 OVC) dropped a 75-69 decision at Missouri State on Saturday, Dec. 6.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS

Omaha (5-4 overall, 0-0 Summit League) finishes up a brief two-game home stand on Sunday afternoon.  The Mavs are 4-2 within the friendly confines of Sapp Fieldhouse and are coming off a 12-point win over CSU Bakersfield, who was rated 14th in the latest Collegeinsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll. 

The Mavericks have two players who score in double digits.  UNO is led by sophomore guard Mikaela Shaw who is averaging a double-double this season.  Shaw leads the team in points (14.0) and rebounds (10.6).  She has had four double-double performances this season and scored double digits six times this season.  Junior Brianna Bogard is second on the team in points per game (11.8).  Bogard has scored at least 20 points twice this season and has been in double digits five times.  Lanese Bough, a senior guard, leads the team with 41 assists and 23 steals.  She also is second on the team in rebounds per game (5.1).

Omaha averages 65.9 points per game and allows only 61.9.  The Mavericks are shooting 41.8 percent from the field (217-for-519) and average 40.7 rebounds per game.  The Mavs are holding their opponents to 34.2 percent from the field (187-for-547).  Omaha holds a 40.7-39.0 rebounding advantage over their opponents this season.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS

SIUE (2-5, 0-0 OVC) is in the midst of a five-game road trip and has lost three straight games.  The Cougars are 0-5 on the road this season and 2-0 at home.

SIUE has three players who average in double-digit points this season.  Shronda Butts, a junior guard, leads the team with 14.4 points per game.  Butts shoots 44.4 percent (32-for-72) from the floor and 80.5 percent (33-for-41) from the free-throw line.  Tierny Austin, a junior guard, averages 11.9 points per game on 43.3 shooting (26-for-60) from the floor.  Gwen Adams, a freshman forward, chips in 11.4 points and shoots 56.0 percent (25-for-50) from the field.  Adams averages 6.4 rebounds per game and is the top rebounder for the Cougars.

The Cougars average 67.9 points per game, but give up 70.1 points.  SIUE shoots 41.3 percent (163-for-395) from the floor, but only 29.7 percent (33-for-111) from 3-point land.  Opponents shoot 42.9 percent (175-for-408) from the field, but only 27.7 percent (38-for-137) from distance against SIUE.

THE SERIES

This is the second all-time meeting between the two programs.  The only other meeting came on Nov. 27, 1992, when the Cougars defeated the Mavs, 69-66.

LAST TIME OUT

OMAHA, Neb. – Five Omaha women's basketball players finished in double figures, and the Mavs defeated CSU Bakersfield, 80-68, at the Sapp Fieldhouse on Thursday night.

Brianna Bogard had a team-high 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field.  Mikaela Shaw had her fourth double-double of the year with 13 points and 14 rebounds.  Taijhe Kelly and Felicia Anderson each had 12 points.  Victoria Trowbridge added 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Bakersfield was led by Brooklynn Hinkens, who had a game-high 19 points.  Shaquita Smith added 14 points.

The Mavericks shot 58.0 percent (29-for-50) from the field, including 59.3 percent in the first half.  Bakersfield shot 33.8 percent (24-for-71) from the floor.  Omaha held a 37-32 advantage on the boards and outscored Bakersfield 42-18 in the paint.

Omaha jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first 2:35 of the game on buckets from Bogard, Kelly, and Lanese Bough.  CSU Bakersfield tied the game at 6-6 with a jumper from Brittany Sims and a lay-up by Erika Williams.  Omaha went on a 9-2 run, which was capped off by a pair of Bough free throws to stretch the lead to seven points, 15-8, with 12:46 remaining in the first half.

The Roadrunners cut the Maverick lead to two points with 8:56 left in the first half on a pair of Tyonna Outland jumpers.  Omaha's Trowbridge scored seven straight points to put the Mavs up by 11 points, 29-18, with 6:44 remaining in the half.

Omaha stretched the lead to 13 points late in the first half on a jumper by Remy Davenport.  Anderson also hit a jumper as the first half ended to give the Mavs a 39-27 lead.

Early in the second half, Omaha stretched its lead to 14 points, 44-30, following a 3-pointer from Bograd.  Bakersfield cut the lead to four points, 46-42, with 14:17 left on the clock.  A Bogard fast break lay-up sparked Omaha to an 11-1 run to extend the lead to 56-43 with 9:25 remaining.

The Roadrunners made one last push, getting within six points at 72-66 with 1:34 to go, but the Mavs closed the game on an 8-2 run to put Bakersfield away.  Shaw and Bogard combined for six of the Mavericks final eight points in the 80-68 victory.

PENQUITE TO TRANSFER

Omaha head Coach Brittany Lange announced freshman guard Annie Penquite will transfer at the completion of the first semester to pursue other opportunities. 

“On behalf of the Maverick program, I want to wish Annie all the best and want to thank her for her time and contributions to our program,” Coach Lange commented.

INDIVIDUAL SUMMIT LEADERS

  • Lanese Bough is tied for the Summit League lead in assists per game (4.6) and steals per game (2.9).  Bough is also 17th in the league in rebounding (5.1).
  • Madi Robson is tied for eighth in assists (3.2), while Brianna Bogard is 14th (2.2).
  • Mikaela Shaw ranks second in the league in rebounds per game (10.6) and seventh in points per game (14.0).  Shaw also is 4th in field goal percentage (.526).
  • Brianna Bogard ranks 11th in the Summit League in points per game (11.8).
  • Felicia Anderson ranks 19th in 3-point field goal percent (.316).
  • Taijhe Kelly ranks second in blocked shots (2.9 bpg).

DEFENSE

Through nine games this season, Omaha is holding their opponents to 61.9 points per game, which leads the Summit League.  The Mavs also lead the conference in field goal defense, allowing their opponents to shoot only 34.2 percent from the field.  They rank second in the league in 3-point field goal defense (27.5 percent) and third in the league in assists per game.

MAV TIES

Two members of the SIUE coaching staff have ties with the Omaha women's basketball program.  Head coach Paula Buscher spent nine seasons (1988-97) as an assistant coach for the Mavs before taking her first head coaching position at Minnesota State-Mankato in 1997.  Buscher returned to Omaha a year later to become the head coach.  She coached the Mavs for two seasons compiling a 26-28 record, before moving to Bradley University. 

Associate head coach Kari Kerkhoff is a 2002 graduate of UNO.  Kerkhoff earned a bachelor of science in secondary education, while starting in 50 games during her collegiate career. A four-year letter winner with Omaha, she played two seasons for the Mavericks under Coach Buscher.
