OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end on Sunday with a 68-48 loss to Milwaukee at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The loss was the Mavericks' first at home this season in seven games and dropped them to 8-6 overall heading into conference play. Milwaukee improved to 4-9 overall.
Ericka House was the only Maverick to reach double figures with 18 points.
Taijhe Kelly had nine points, 11 rebounds - eight on the offensive glass - and five blocked shots. The Mavs committed a season-high 23 turnovers, which Milwaukee turned into a 16-5 edge in points off turnovers.
The Mavericks got off to a solid start, building a 21-10 lead with 7:35 left in the first half. House had the Mavs' first 10 points of the game on 4-of-4 shooting with two 3-pointers, and
Mikaela Shaw had back-to-back buckets to give UNO an early 14-7 lead. After a 3-pointer by Milwaukee's Angela Rodriguez made it 16-10, baskets by Kelly and
Madi Robson around a free throw by House gave the Mavs the 21-10 advantage.
But the Panthers closed the half on a 20-9 run to even the score at 30-30 at the break, then continued their run with seven straight points to open the second half for a 37-30 lead with 15:02 left. The Mavs scored their first points of the second half with 14:50 left on a layup by
Felicia Anderson and later cut the Milwaukee lead to two, 39-37, on an Anderson 3-pointer with 12:55 to go.
But the Panthers went on an 11-2 run over the next 5:32 to grab a 50-39 lead with 7:12 remaining. The Mavs couldn't get within single digits again, as Milwaukee extended the lead in the closing minutes.
Rodriguez had a game-high 19 points and six assists for Milwaukee. Ashley Green had 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Avyanna Young had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Omaha opens Summit League play on Saturday at the Sapp Fieldhouse against Western Illinois at 2 p.m.
