Mavs Fall at South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Omaha women's basketball team fell at South Dakota, 75-51, on Saturday afternoon at the DakotaDome.

The Mavericks dropped to 9-10 overall and 1-4 in the Summit League. South Dakota improved to 10-10 and 1-4 in the league.

Lanese Bough had 10 points and five rebounds for the Mavs. Sami Pawlak added nine points, four rebounds, an assist, block and steal - all in the second half. Taijhe Kelly had seven points and four rebounds.

The Mavs opened up a 4-0 lead to begin the game on a jumper by Ericka House and a fastbreak layup by Madi Robson after a block by Kelly. After that, nothing seemed to go right. The Coyotes went on a 13-0 run to take a 13-4 lead at the 12:18 mark. The Mavs committed 14 turnovers in the first half and shot just 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from the floor while going 0-for-7 from 3-point range and 0-for-3 from the free throw line, as USD built a 42-16 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Mavs fell down 54-22 but responded with a 12-2 run to get within 56-34 at the 8:38 mark. That was as close as UNO could close the gap. The Coyotes went back up by 31, but Pawlak did most of her damage in the final 10 minutes to help the Mavs end up outscoring USD in the second half, 35-33.

The Mavs shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) for the game and just 1-of-10 from 3-point range. UNO connected on 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line. USD hit 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field and 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from long distance. The Coyotes went 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.

The Mavs matched their season high with 23 turnovers, although they forced a season-high 23 turnovers by USD, including 15 in the second half. The Mavs' leading scorer, House, was held to five points, only the second time this season she couldn't reach double figures.

The Mavericks are back at home this week to host Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7 p.m.
