IUPUI Drops Mavs in Final Second, 45-43

Final Stats

OMAHA, Neb. - Kerah Nelson hit the game-winning layup with 0.7 seconds left to give IUPUI a 45-43 win over the UNO women's basketball team on Saturday at the Sapp Fieldhouse.

The Mavericks (16-8, 6-6 Summit) had tied the game at 43-43 on a 14-foot jumper by Paige Frauendorfer with 25 seconds left. The Jaguars (14-9, 7-3 Summit) called timeout with 18.9 seconds left to set up their final play. On the final play, Dawn Luster dribbled some time off the clock before working the ball to the left wing to Katie Comello, who drew defenders and passed underneath the basket to the Jaguars' star, Nelson. Nelson spun to her left and flipped the winning basket off the glass and in with 0.7 seconds left. The Mavs were unable to get a shot off after Nash launched the inbounds pass down the court and fell for just the second time at home in conference play this season.

Frauendorfer led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds. Nash had nine points and four assists. Taijhe Kelly blocked six shots and had seven rebounds.

IUPUI freshman center Nevena Markovic scored a career-high 14 points to spark the Jaguars off the bench. Nelson finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout with no team gaining a lead bigger than five in the second half. There were six ties and 10 lead changes alone in the second half.

IUPUI went up 25-20 shortly after halftime, but Frauendorfer scored six straight to give UNO a 26-25 lead with 15:49 left. From that point on, it was a one-possession game the rest of the way. IUPUI gained a 40-37 lead with 4:26 left on a Markovic basket, but Carolyn Blair-Mobley hit two free throws, and Nash hit a jumper with 2:40 left to put UNO up 41-40.

Comello put IUPUI in front 42-41 with two foul shots of her own with 1:50 to play, and DeAirra Goss added a free throw with 37 seconds left for a 43-41 margin. Frauendorfer beat a defender off the dribble and pulled up for a wide-open elbow jumper to tie the game. But the Jaguars turned to their senior forward, Nelson, for the game-winner on the final possession.

Omaha shot 31.3 percent (15-of-48), while IUPUI shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55). The Mavs committed 18 turnovers against the top turnover-forcing team in The Summit League, but UNO still had an 18-14 advantage in points off turnovers. IUPUI won the battle in the paint, 28-18, and got 14 second-chance points off of 17 offensive rebounds.

The Mavs are off next week and don't return to the court until Feb. 21 at South Dakota State at 7 p.m.
