Paige Frauendorfer scored 24 points, but South Dakota State used a late 11-0 run to pull away from the UNO women's basketball team for a 69-56 win at Frost Arena on Thursday night.
The Mavs fell to 16-9 overall and 6-7 in Summit League play, while the Jackrabbits improved to 21-7 and 13-2 in conference play. SDSU's win, coupled with IUPUI's loss at South Dakota Thursday night, clinched The Summit League regular-season title for the Jackrabbits.
South Dakota State broke open a 52-49 game at the 10:25 mark of the second half with an 11-0 run over the next 6:09 to claim a 63-49 lead. The Mavs were unable to get within single digits again.
Frauendofer led all scorers with 24 points, one off her season high and two off her career high. She also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Ericka House added 14 points with a 4-for-7 performance from behind the arc.
Stacia Gebers had six points off the bench.
The Mavs shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61), while SDSU shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54). The Jackrabbits were 8-of-16 from 3-point range and 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
UNO led 8-6 early but fell behind 18-12 at the 12:09 mark. But Gebers came off the bench and scored a layup, and House hit a long-range bomb to cut it to 18-17 at the 10:59 mark.
The teams continued at a spirited pace with South Dakota State maintaining a lead over the Mavericks the rest of the half. SDSU went up 29-23 with 7:29 left, but Frauendorfer and
Casse Vaughn hit back-to-back buckets to get it back to 29-27 at the 5:28 mark.
But the Jackrabbits went on a 7-0 run to make it 36-27 with 3:05 remaining in the half. Trailing 38-29, the Mavs got a driving bucket from Frauendorfer just outside the paint, and after UNO got two key defensive stops down the stretch, Frauendorfer followed her own missed 3-pointer and scored a baseline jumper at the buzzer to cut it to 38-33 at the break.
The Jackrabbits went back up by seven early in the second half, but Frauendorfer hit a jumper and House drilled a 3-pointer to make it 42-40. But the Jackrabbits hit a 3 from the corner on the inbounds play following the first media timeout and then added another bucket to make it 47-40.
The Mavs scored five straight off of two free throws by Frauendorfer, one by
Taijhe Kelly and a fastbreak layup by Frauendorfer to trim the lead to two, 47-45. After SDSU hit from the wing for a four-point lead, Frauendorfer again got ahead of the pack for a fastbreak layup to get it back to two, 49-47.
Megan Waytashek drilled a 3-pointer from the corner after the second media timeout to give SDSU a 52-47 advantage. Frauendorfer beat the shot clock to cut the deficit to three, 52-49, at the 10:25 mark, but the Jackrabbits answered with a 11-0 run to extend their lead to 14 points, 63-49, with 5:12 to go. The Mavs were held scoreless until House hit a triple with 4:16 to play, a stretch of 6:09.
With her five assists in the game,
Jamie Nash broke her own single-season school record of 166 with 168 assists this season. Kelly blocked four shots and became the fourth Maverick to reach 100 career blocked shots.
The Mavs now travel to Fargo, N.D., for a 7 p.m. game at North Dakota State on Saturday.
