Women's Basketball Omaha Athletics

IUPUI Tops Mavericks, 60-49

Final Stats

INDIANAPOLIS
- The Omaha women's basketball team fell on the road at IUPUI on Thursday night, 60-49.

The Mavericks fell to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in The Summit League. The Jaguars improved to 9-7 overall and took sole possession of second place in the conference with a 3-1 record.

The Mavs got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as 12 midway through the first half, but they rallied and took a six-point lead, 41-35, with 14:57 left in the game. But IUPUI outscored the Mavs 25-8 the rest of the game, as the Mavs hit just four field goals the rest of the way and couldn't score in the final 4:23.

Paige Frauendorfer led the Mavs with 11 points despite playing only 24 minutes because of foul trouble. Casse Vaughn added nine points and six rebounds. Ericka House had eight points, and Jamie Nash had seven points and seven assists.

IUPUI jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening 1:58. Frauendorfer picked up two fouls in the first 1:08 and had to spend the next 7:07 on the bench, complicating matters for the Mavericks.

The Jaguars pushed the lead to 17-5, and the Mavs committed five turnovers in the opening 4:58, but House drilled a 3-pointer and Frauendorfer hit an elbow jumper to cut the lead to 17-10 with 10:26 left in the half. IUPUI built the lead back to double digits at 21-10 on a 3-pointer by Nicole Rogers with 9:40 left, but the Mavs tightened up their defense and House hit another three and Jamie Nash converted a fastbreak layup after a steal to cut it to 21-15.

Down 33-25 with 2:35 left in the first half, the Mavs went on a 16-2 run spanning both halves to take a 41-35 lead with 14:57 remaining. UNO cut the lead to three by halftime, 33-30, and out of halftime, Frauendorfer converted a three-point play at 18:32 to tie the game for the first time, 33-33, and Vaughn scored down low to give the Mavs their first lead, 35-33, with 17:36 to play.

After IUPUI tied it at 35-35, Nash fed Kelly for an easy two, then picked off a long pass and laid it in to make it 39-35 with 16:17 to go. After the media timeout, Taijhe Kelly blocked her second shot of the half, and Nash found Frauendorfer at the other end for a layup and a 41-35 lead.

But trailing 43-38, IUPUI reeled off an 8-0 run to reclaim a 46-43 lead with 11:54 remaining. Frauendorfer picked up her fourth foul and checked out with 9:56 to play with the Mavs down one, 46-45.

Down 52-47, UNO's Carly Cator hit a jumper with her toe on the three-point line to make it 52-49 with 4:23 left. But those would be the last points for the Mavericks, as IUPUI gained separation at the free throw line down the stretch.

Katie Comello and Kerah Nelson each scored 13 points to lead IUPUI.

The Mavs shot just 35.2 percent (19-of-54) and hit 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Jaguars weren't great from the floor, going 20-of-54 (37.0 percent), but they did hit 7-of-20 (35.0 percent) from behind the arc.

Despite turning the ball over often early on against the Jaguars' pressing defense, the Mavs finished with just 15 turnovers, the fewest IUPUI has forced in 16 games this season. The Jaguars came in forcing 24.7 turnovers per game.

The Mavs travel to Macomb, Ill., to face Western Illinois on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
