Elkhorn Native Gillaspie Named New Graduate Assist

OMAHA, Neb. - Elkhorn native and former Milwaukee standout Makenzie Gillaspie has joined the UNO women's soccer coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2012 season.

After an accomplished four-year career at Milwaukee, Gillaspie will pursue a Master's degree in psychology at UNO.

"I'm really excited to join the UNO staff," Gillaspie said. "This is where I grew up, so after being away for four years at college I'm glad to move closer to home. UNO is an up and coming program and with the transition to Division I and The Summit League, I'm excited to be a part of it."

Gillaspie started 79 games at Milwaukee, which is tied for sixth in school history. As a senior in 2011, Gillaspie was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team, as well as the Horizon League All-Tournament Team after helping the Panthers win the Horizon League title. Milwaukee finished with a 19-3 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Despite tearing a ligament in her knee in September, Gillaspie went on to make 19 starts and log 1,677 minutes. After playing primarily as a midfielder in the first three years of her career, Gillaspie transitioned to defender in her final season. She helped the Panthers post 11 shutouts while contributing one goal and two assists. Gillaspie finished her career with nine goals and six assists.

At Elkhorn, Gillaspie led the Antlers to state championships in 2006 and 2007. She was a four-time all-state selection in high school.
