OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO baseball team closed its series with future Summit League foe North Dakota State on Sunday, defeating the Bison 9-1 at the Ballpark at Boys Town. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 10-22, while NDSU is now 22-6 on the year.
As a team, the Mavericks totaled nine runs on 13 hits. Senior
Colby McCord finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while seniors
Mark Waldron and
Scotty Donner and junior
Connor McCrite all went 2-for-5. Waldron and McCrite each scored once, and McCrite added two runs driven in.
Senior
Brady Hohl was 1-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored, while freshman
Alex Mortensen was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs of his own.
Redshirt freshman
Zach Williamsen (2-1) shined on the mound, allowing one run on five hits over 7.0 innings. The Millard West product struck out two and issued just one walk. The loss went to Zach Wentz (1-2), who surrendered four runs on eight hits. Wentz struck out four and walked four over 5.1 innings of work.
For the day, the Bison were limited to five hits, with four singles and one home run.
North Dakota State got on the board first with Wentz's solo roundtripper to left center in the top of the first inning.
UNO responded immediately, chalking up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. Hohl drew a leadoff walk and stole second, then scored on McCord's RBI single up the middle. Waldron then chipped a single through the left side that moved McCord to second, and McCord was plated on McCrite's RBI flare single to right, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Nebraska Omaha tacked on a pair of runs with two hits. Mortensen started off with a walk and advanced to second on sophomore
Ryan Tomlinson's single to right. Both runners moved into scoring position on Reck's sacrifice bunt, and Mortensen came in on Hohl's sacrifice fly to center. McCord then walked to put runners on the corners for Palensky, who sent a single to center to score Tomlinson and extend the lead to 4-1.
In the seventh, with two outs and the bases loaded, Hohl delivered a base-clearing double to right center, which scored Reck, Mortensen and sophomore
Cody Brown.
Up 7-1, the Mavericks added two more runs on three hits in the eighth. Waldron double to left center and scored when McCrite tripled to right center. Donner then singled to left, which brought in McCrite and capped the Mavs' day with the 9-1 final score.
UNO returns to action April 13-15, traveling to UNLV for a four-game series in Las Vegas, Nev. First pitch on Friday is set for 8:05 p.m. (CT), followed by a 3:05 p.m. (CT) doubleheader on Saturday.
