DES MOINES, Iowa - UNO's
Sami Spenner set four different personal bests on the first day of competition at the Drake Relays. Spenner is believed to be the first UNO athlete to compete in the heptathlon in the prestigious event.
Spenner is in fourth place with 3,330 points. The athletes ahead of her are all current or former Division I All-Americans. Spenner is competing unattached because she is redshirting the outdoor season.
Spenner began competition with a fifth-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.33, edging past her previous personal best set on March 31 at Northwest Missouri State.
She tied with Arkansas' Makeba Alcide, the defending SEC champion heptathlon champion, in the high jump with a mark of 5-07 3/4, a personal best by almost two inches.
In the shot put, Spenner came in fourth with a throw of 36-10 1/2, two inches farther than her previous PR also set at Northwest.
She finished the first day of competition with her fastest time ever in the 200 meters, a time of 24.77, just ahead of her previous best time set on March 31.
Spenner will take aim at an overall heptathlon PR on Thursday when the final three events - the long jump, javelin and 800 meters - begin at 10:30 a.m. Her best score in the event is 5,312 set at Northwest.
Should Spenner score 5,600 or more points, she will qualify for the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. in June. She has already qualified for the U.S. Indoor Track and Field championship with her score of 3,810 in the pentathlon earned during the 2012 indoor season.
