ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UNO baseball team closed its weekend series at Oakland on Sunday, falling 5-4 in 11 innings to its future Summit League peer at OU Baseball Field. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 11-30 on the year, while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 14-25.
Freshman
Alex Mortensen went 3-for-6 at the plate, while senior
Scotty Donner, sophomore
Caleb Palensky and freshman
Joe Mancuso had two hits apiece for the day. Donner also scored once and drove in a run.
Oakland was led by Jake Morton, who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
The win went to Russell Luxton (2-4), who threw the final hitless inning with two strikeouts. Senior
Curtis Smith (2-4) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits over 3.2 innings of work.
The Mavericks got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Sophomore
Dylan McGill was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a fielding error. UNO added another score in the fourth when the Mavs strung together three hits, capped by Palensky's RBI single that scored Donner and made it 2-0.
Oakland tallied its first run in the bottom of the fourth, putting up a hit and capitalizing on two Maverick errors. Aaron Cieslak reached on a throwing error, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nolan Jacoby's single pushed him to third, and Spencer Marentette's RBI grounded allowed Cieslak to cross the plate at 2-1.
The Mavs responded with one in the fifth, with senior
Mark Waldron leading off with an infield single. He went to second on sophomore
Jeff McNichols' sacrifice bunt and moved to third when junior
Connor McCrite reached on a fielding error. McGill then singled to the pitcher to score Waldron, pushing it to 3-1.
OU brought it back to a one-run game in the bottom of the frame. Morton led off with a single through the left side and stole second, then score on John Estes' RBI double to right center to bring the score to 3-2.
Nebraska Omaha chipped in another run in the seventh. McNichols drew a leadoff walk and was advanced to second with McCrite's sacrifice bunt. Donner then dropped a single into center field to score McNichols, extending the lead to 4-2.
The Golden Grizzlies tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on two hits. Singles by Morton and Tim Ryan and a walk for Estes loaded the bases for Ian Yetsko, who was plunked by a pitch to bring Morton across. Ryan then scored on Cieslak's sacrifice fly to left, evening the score at 4-4.
Oakland finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 11th. Trent Drumheller singled down the left field line and went to second on a wild pitch, and Tim Ryan's RBI single to center pushed him in for the winning run, capping the weekend with a 5-4 final score.
