MARYVILLE, Mo. - UNO junior
Sami Spenner, competing unattached, won the 2012 Ashley Nally Heptathlon at Northwest Missouri State on Sunday, setting a personal best along the way.
Spenner won handily with a score of 5,312, easily outdistancing runner up Anna Holterman who was also competing unattached. Spenner is redshirting the outdoor season so her marks count only toward her career best totals. Her previous career best in the event was 5,079 set at the NCAA Division II championship last year when she finished fifth.
Spenner set three event personal bests, all on day one, when she posted a time of 14.44 in the 100 hurdles, 5-05 1/4 in the high jump and 24.98 in the 200 meters. She won both the long jump (19-03 1/4) and the 800 (2:23.25) and took second in the javelin (109-02) on Sunday.
The Mavericks are not eligible for the NCAA championship due to their transition to Division I. However, Spenner's score would rank 12th in D-1 pending the outcome of the weekend's other meets.
UNO's
Amanda Alexander, also competing at the event, earned a score of 3,226 to finish 10th in her first heptathlon.
The Mavericks will return to Northwest as a team on Saturday, April 7 to take part in the Student Body Northwest Open.
