FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The UNO baseball team suffered its second straight loss to future Summit League opponent IPFW on Saturday, falling 6-3 at Mastodon Field. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 9-18 on the year, while IPFW improves to 7-17.
Freshman
Alex Mortensen went 2-for-4 with two runs driven in, while senior
Colby McCord finished 2-for-5 and scored once. Senior
Brady Hohl scored once and added a hit late in the game, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 19 games.
IPFW's Malcolm White led the way with a 2-for-3 day with one run scored, and Shane Trevino and Kristian Gayday each tacked on a pair of runs.
Markus Kalber (4-3) picked up the win, throwing 7.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Kalber accounted for five strikeouts and three walks. Junior
Derek Landis (0-1) took the loss over three innings, surrendering five runs – four earned – on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Steve Danielak earned his third save of the year, holding the Mavericks scoreless and limiting UNO to two hits over the final 1.1 innings.
UNO opened the game with a promising 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Singles from McCord and senior
Mark Waldron put two runners on for Mortensen, who delivered a two-run double to left that scored both.
The Mavericks' lead held until the bottom of the third, when IPFW stormed back for five runs on two hits and capitalized on a UNO error. Lucas Salerno scored when Carter DeBoe reached on a fielder's choice, and Trevino later sent a two-run single to center that plated DeBoe and Hathaway. Trevino then advanced on the Mavs' throwing miscue, and Gayday's two-run single to right center brought Trevino and White across, pushing the Mastodons ahead 5-2.
IPFW added another run in the sixth when Clay Hathaway doubled to left to score Salerno, extending the lead to 6-2.
In the eighth, Hohl and McCord got it started with back-to-back singles. Hohl scored when Waldron reached on a fielder's choice and IPFW committed a throwing error on the same play, making it 6-3. In the ninth, UNO managed to put two runners on and had the tying run at the plate with one out, but the Mastodons held on for the 6-3 win.
The Mavs return to action in the series finale on Sunday, April 1, with first pitch at 11 a.m. (CT) at Mastodon Field.
