WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UNO baseball team closed its run at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday, dropping a 3-1 loss to Northwestern at Chain of Lakes Park. With the defeat, the Mavericks are now 7-16 on the year, while NU improves to 7-12.
Senior
Colby McCord finished 2-for-3 with the only run scored, while senior
Scotty Donner was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman
Alex Mortensen also had a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4.
Junior
Matt Tew (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings pitched. Tew struck out five and walked three batters. Northwestern's Dan Tyson (2-2) earned the win, scattering six hits over 6.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Kyle Ruchim claimed his fifth save of the year with two innings of work.
The Wildcats got on the board first, plating a single run in the second, fifth and seventh innings. In the third, Northwestern singled to right to score Jack Livingston, and in the fifth Jack Havey's RBI single up the middle allowed Ruchim to come across. Ruchim recorded his second run of the day in the seventh, scoring on Paul Snieder's sacrifice fly to center that spotted NU a 3-0 lead.
Nebraska Omaha scored its only run in the top of the eighth. McCord led off with a single and moved to second when sophomore
Caleb Palensky was hit by a pitch. Donner then sent an RBI single to right center, bringing in McCord to make it 3-1, which stood as the final tally.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, March 27, facing in-state rival Creighton. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
