Mavericks Fall at South Dakota

Final Stats

VERMILLION, S.D.
- The UNO women's basketball team fell to future Summit League foe South Dakota on Tuesday night, 58-38, at the DakotaDome.

The Mavericks fell to 13-11 on the year after their lowest scoring output and shooting percentage of the season. South Dakota has won six in a row and is now 16-6 overall and 7-5 in the Summit League, good for third place in the standings.

In a defensive first half, the Mavs scored just eight points en route to trailing 23-8 at halftime. UNO fell behind 7-0 before finally getting on the board on a Taijhe Kelly free throw at the 11:54 mark.

After that, the Mavericks went on a mini spurt. Heather Pohl scored a 3-pointer and a layup, and Jamie Nash made a steal and converted a layup for an 8-7 UNO lead with 9:28 left. However, the Mavs would go the rest of the half without scoring. UNO shot just 3-of-26 (11.5 percent) from the field in the first half. On the plus side, the Mavericks tightened up their defense and allowed the Coyotes just 23 points in the first half on 8-of-38 (21.1 percent) shooting.

In the second half, the Mavs finally hit some baskets to put 30 points on the board in the period. But it was too late to change the outcome of the game, as South Dakota built its lead to as many as 30 with 5:09 left in the game.

The Mavs' 38 points was the lowest total since UNO scored 38 points on Feb. 1, 2002, which ironically also came at South Dakota in a 58-38 final score when the schools were both members of the North Central Conference.

Although the Mavs finished 13-of-56 (23.2 percent) from the field, the Coyotes didn't fare much better, finishing at 20-of-71 (28.2 percent). UNO hit 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from long range, while USD hit 3-of-27 (11.1 percent).

Pohl had a team-high 10 points. Nash had eight points, and Cathleen Cox had seven points. Kelly finished with five points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Amber Hegge led South Dakota with 14 points. Jodie Boss added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

The Mavericks return home for senior night on Friday against Dakota Wesleyan in their final home game of the season. The Mavs will pay tribute to their only senior, Heather Pohl, prior to the 7 p.m. tip-off at Sapp Fieldhouse.
