PULLMAN, Wash. – The UNO baseball team completed its four-game series at Washington State with a twice-postponed doubleheader on Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field, falling 7-1 and 5-3. With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 1-7 on the year, while the Cougars improve to 5-2.
Game one of the Monday doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played as a single game on Saturday, but weather prompted officials to reschedule for Sunday as a doubleheader. On Sunday, the game was suspended in the fifth inning due to snowfall in the Pullman area.
GAME 1 – WASHINGTON STATE 7, NEBRASKA OMAHA 1
In the opener, junior
Tyler Splichal went 2-for-4 with the only run scored, while senior
Cory Buckley also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Washington State pounded out 13 hits in the game, helped by a 3-for-3 performance by Derek Jones. The senior scored once and had three RBI, nearly hitting for the cycle with a double, a triple and a home run.
Kyle Swannack (1-0) earned the win after starting the game on Sunday, allowing four hits over five scoreless innings of work. Swannack also struck out six and walked just one.
UNO starter
Andrew Reck (0-2) took the loss, as the senior went 4.2 innings and surrendered five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Washington State got on the board early, putting up a run in the first, followed by two more runs in both the second and third innings.
Down 5-0, the Mavs countered with their only run in the top of the sixth. Splichal delivered a double to right center, followed by a Buckley single up the middle to put the lead runner at third. Sophomore
Beau Suponchick then grounded out for the sacrifice, plating Splichal and making it 5-1.
The Cougars tacked on single scores in the sixth and the seventh innings, bringing the final score to 7-1.
GAME 2 – WASHINGTON STATE 5, NEBRASKA OMAHA 3
Suponchick went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the series finale, while senior
Scotty Donner tripled, scored once and had two RBI, along with a pair of walks.
Spencer Jackson (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit over an inning of work with three strikeouts. Buckley (0-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits over a six-inning start. He also fanned three batters and allowed only one walk. WSU's Anthony Drobnick threw the final inning to earn his first save of the year.
Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Washington State put up four runs on four hits. Taylor Ard led off with a single to right center, and Jones walked, putting two runners on base. Adam Nelubowich then sent a home run over the rightfield wall, making it 3-0. Back-to-back singles by Tommy Richards and PJ Jones brought another runner into scoring position, and Richards came in on Patrick Claussen's RBI groundout to take a 4-0 lead.
The Mavericks threatened with a trio of runs in the top of the fifth. Suponchick singled to center, and senior
Brandon Winkelmann walked before Donner's triple down the right field line scored both runners. Donner was later plated on senior
Brady Hohl's RBI groundout, cutting the score to 4-3.
UNO left two runners on in the seventh, unable to muster the tying run. WSU added an insurance run in the seventh when Blackham scored on Ard's sacrifice fly, and the Cougars held on for the final tally of 5-3 and the series sweep.
