North Dakota 2, UNO 1
Northern Iowa 3, UNO 2
AMES, Iowa - The UNO softball team dropped its final two games at the Ramada Inn UNI-Dome Classic at Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday, 2-1 to North Dakota and 3-2 to Northern Iowa.
UNO began the day with the 2-1 loss to Great West Conference foe North Dakota. The Mavs (0-4) got a strong performance from freshman pitcher
Kat Barrow, who pitched a complete game in her first career start, allowing just two runs on seven hits. Barrow struck out five and walked just one.
Katelyn Hinton went 2-for-3 and had an RBI single in the first inning to score
Lindsay Redding that tied the game at 1-1.
North Dakota (3-1) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth when UND catcher Brittany Baker advanced from third to home on an illegal pitch.
The Mavs totaled five hits in the game, with Redding,
Tonya Peterson and
Amber Lutmer each recording singles in addition to Hinton's two hits.
In the nightcap, UNI kept the Mavs' would-be tying run at third base in the top of the seventh to take the 3-2 win.
Molly Negrete had walked to open the inning and advanced to third with two outs, but UNO grounded out to end the game.
Peterson had an RBI double in the first inning to give the Mavs a 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded single with one out, but UNO pitcher
Dana Elsasser was able to get out of the inning without any further damage. UNI took the lead in the second inning on another RBI single, then tacked on one more run in the fifth inning to go up 3-1.
Hinton hit a two-out RBI double in the sixth inning to score pinch-runner
Ashley Lynch and make it 3-2. But the Mavs were unable to tie the game in the seventh.
Hinton again finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
The Mavs will try for their first Division I win this year at the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, Ala., next weekend.
