OMAHA, Neb. - Carolyn Blair-Mobley and
Casse Vaughn each scored a career-high 28 points, and the Omaha women's basketball team claimed a 92-78 win over College of Saint Mary on Friday afternoon at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks enter the Christmas break and Summit League action with an 8-2 record. Omaha's 92 points is the highest total under Coach Chance Lindley and is the most since scoring 96 on Feb. 4, 2009 at Northwest Missouri State. College of Saint Mary (10-4), ranked No. 25 in NAIA Division II and located just down the road from the UNO campus, played the game as an exhibition.
After a sluggish first half, the Mavs took a three-point lead into the halftime break, 40-37. But coming out of halftime, UNO went on a 15-2 run to take a 55-39 lead with 16:07 remaining. The Flames cut the lead to 57-52 at 13:17, but Omaha went on an 11-0 run to claim a 16-point lead at 68-52 with 9:46 remaining. CSM never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Vaughn added a career-high 14 rebounds on her career day. She finished 12-of-18 from the floor and led the Mavericks to a 52-24 edge in points in the paint. Blair-Mobley shot 8-of-12 and went 3-of-5 from 3-point range. She was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line and chipped in eight rebounds to go with her 28 points. The Mavs finished with a 49-25 advantage on the glass.
Jamie Nash added 10 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
The Mavs got off to a slow start and trailed for a good portion of the first half. Down 32-28 with 3:06 left in the half, the Mavs reeled off a 12-0 run to take a 40-32 lead.
Ericka House started the run with a 3-pointer, and
Paige Frauendorfer hit a jumper on the next possession. Blair-Mobley scored the next seven points of the run on four free throws and a 3-pointer, and the Mavs claimed their biggest lead of the half. But CSM scored the last five points of the half in the final minute to close the gap to 40-37.
The Mavs pulled away shortly after halftime on opening layups from
Taijhe Kelly and Blair-Mobley, followed by a 3-pointer by Frauendorfer to make it 47-37. Blair-Mobley nailed a trey, and after a CSM bucket, Vaughn hit a free throw and a short jumper, followed by a
Carly Cator basket for a 55-39 lead before the first media timeout.
UNO shot 50.0 percent (34-of-68) from the floor and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the free throw line. CSM stayed close by hitting 14-of-32 (43.8 percent) from long distance. Theresa Elworth led the Flames with 26 points.
The Mavericks open Summit League play after Christmas break on Dec. 28 at Kansas City at 7 p.m.
