OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team exploded for five goals in the third period to pull away from Alabama-Huntsville, 8-0, on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
Brock Montpetit led the attack with four assists, and
Ryan Walters added two goals and an assist. Freshman goaltender Anthony Stolarz earned his first collegiate win with 20 saves in the shutout.
The Mavericks have now swept three straight series and won six straight games, the second-longest winning streak in school history.
Leading 3-0 heading into the third period, Walters scored his first of the game just 49 seconds into the period.
Johnnie Searfoss notched an unassisted goal from a sharp angle 2:10 later before Walters scored again on a wrap-around at 8:23.
Zahn Raubenheimer and
Brent Gwidt added goals in the last four minutes to finish the scoring as the Mavericks hit a new season high for goals in a game.
UNO opened the scoring halfway through the first period. Montpetit carried the puck into the offensive zone but had the puck knocked off his stick. He chased it down and threw a blind pass to the slot that Matt White hammered home for his fifth goal of the year.
The Mavericks used the powerplay to stretch their lead early in the second period. UAH's Sebastian Geoffrion was off for a contact to the head major and a game disqualification after a hit on
Andrew Schmit late in the first period, and teammate Alex Allen was in the box for tripping, giving UNO a five-on-three. Nick Seeler cashed in with a shot from the high slot for his second goal of the year.
Then on the ensuing five-on-four,
Andrej Sustr stepped down the left wing and tossed a pass across to
Dominic Zombo who slid a shot five-hole past goaltender Gregg Gruehl. The goal, 22 seconds later, made it 3-0 Mavericks.
Walters has now scored goals in five straight games and amassed 14 points in that stretch. Montpetit's four-point night is a season high for all Maverick players.
The Mavericks return to WCHA play next weekend when they visit Minnesota for games on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1.
