OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, as the Saint Louis Billikens earned a 51-42 win at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Billikens (1-3) jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the opening nine minutes and never trailed en route to their first victory of the season. The Mavs (3-1) hit just 1-of-16 field goals (6.3 percent) to start the game but whittled the lead down to three points in the second half. But Omaha could never completely get over the hump.
Paige Frauendorfer and
Jamie Nash each had 11 points to lead the Mavs.
Taijhe Kelly blocked a career-high five shots to go with six points off the bench. Lorreal Jones and Mallory Eggert both had 12 points to lead the Billikens.
The Mavs trailed by as many as 15 in the first half but came back early in the second half. Trailing 31-19, UNO went on a 9-0 run to pull within three points when
Ericka House hit a 3-pointer with 11:32 to play. The Mavs held Saint Louis scoreless for a 4:55 span to get back in the game. After the Billikens pushed the lead to six, House nailed another trey to cut the lead to 34-31 with 7:47 remaining. But the Billikens scored the next six points to build a 40-31 lead with 5:20 to play.
The Mavs pulled within five at 45-40 on a
Taijhe Kelly basket with 2:02 to play. UNO had three chances to pull within one possession, but the Mavs turned it over twice and missed a 3-pointer. The Billikens were perfect on six free throws in the final 25 seconds to ice the game.
The Mavs are back at home on Sunday to host Southwest Minnesota State at 2 p.m.
