Maverick Tennis Falls to Wichita State

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UNO women's tennis team opened the spring season on Sunday, squaring off against fellow Division I opponent Wichita State at the Carriage Club. The Shockers defeated the Mavericks, 7-0. 

In doubles action, senior Kelsie Olson and freshman Alex Tran dropped the match 1-8 to Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova at No. 1. Freshman Rachel Pierson and senior Heather Hottman also lost by the same tally to Delia Damaschin and Montse Fernandez in the No. 2 spot. In the last doubles match at No. 3, junior Lindsay Weideman and freshman Jacqueline Baude dropped the set 0-8 to Valerie Brockman and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul. 

WSU came out swinging in singles action, sweeping all six matches. At No. 1, Tran dropped the set to Lutfiana Budiharto, 0-6, 0-6. Olson fought hard at the No. 2 spot before falling 3-6, 0-6 to Carla Venticinque, and Weideman fell just short at the No. 3 spot to Kovalova, 1-6, 3-6. 

Pierson pulled away with two games against Fernandez in the No. 4 slot before dropping the match 1-6, 1-6. Senior Caitlin Christy kicked off her final campaign in the No. 5 spot, falling short to Mohajaroenkel (0-6, 0-6), and junior Kelsey Bigando faced off against Valerie Brockman (0-6, 0-6) at No. 6. 

The Mavs return to action on Friday, Feb. 3, hosting in-state foe Nebraska Wesleyan. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start at Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
