Omaha, Neb. -
Amanda Woodring hit a school-record eight 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 24 points, as the UNO Mavericks blistered the nets in an 88-49 win over College of St. Mary Wednesday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
Woodring and
Cathleen Cox came off the bench to combine for six first-half 3-pointers, sparking a 26-0 run in the first half to break open a game in which the Flames led for the majority of the first 11 minutes.
Jamie Nash added 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in the win, and Cox finished with 14 points, 12 coming in the first half.
The Mavs scored 49 points off the bench, smashing their previous season high of 20 against York on Dec. 1. Woodring and Cox alone combined to set the Mavs' highest bench output of the season before halftime with 24 points.
College of St. Mary (10-3), ranked 21st in NAIA Division II and playing the game as an exhibition, led for most of the first 10 minutes after hitting 7-of-14 from long distance to start the game. However, the Flames cooled off considerably, going 4-of-29 the rest of the way from 3-point range to finish 11-of-43 (25.6 percent).
Trailing 15-9 with 10:58 left in the first half, Woodring sparked the Mavs with two quick 3s to pull UNO within 18-15. After Tiffany Anzalone answered with a 3 of her own to make it 21-15 CSM, Cox drained a 3 at the 10:08 mark to make it 21-18. College of St. Mary's Karyn Bixler scored to make it 23-18 with 9:24 remaining, but that would be the last basket for the Flames until 26 seconds were left in the first half, an 8:58 scoring drought.
During that time, the Mavericks went on a 26-0 run to take firm control of the game, and it was led by none other than Cox and Woodring's sharp shooting. Cox and Woodring hit consecutive 3-pointers to give UNO a 24-23 lead, its first since it was 5-3.
Woodring then hit her fourth 3-pointer in less than four minutes to push the lead to four, and Cox scored four straight points to make it 31-23 with 5:32 left. UNO then refocused on getting the ball into the paint, scoring seven consecutive easy baskets to end the half with a 44-25 halftime lead.
After the break, the Mavericks cruised to the 39-point win, its third straight win and fourth in the last five games. Woodring, who had been averaging 1.4 points per game coming into Wednesday, smashed her previous career high of 17 points, set at Missouri Western last season. She finished 8-of-12 on 3-pointers, and the Mavericks as a team finished 12-of-25 (48.0 percent). The 12 team 3-pointers were two shy of the school record.
The Mavs held a decisive advantage on the glass, 54-32.
Paige Frauendorfer had a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with her six points. UNO outscored CSM 38-6 in the paint and 20-0 in fast break points.
The Mavericks return to the Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday for their fourth home game in 10 days, as Northwest Missouri State visits for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
