OMAHA, Neb. - Stacia Gebers had a career-high 18 points, and the UNO Mavericks rolled past Briar Cliff 63-47 Saturday afternoon at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The win was the second straight for the Mavericks (5-3) against NAIA competition. Briar Cliff (9-2, 4-0 GPAC) came into the game averaging 82.6 points per game, but was held to just 30.5-percent shooting by the stifling Maverick defense.
On the offensive end, Gebers led the way with 18 points on 9-of-10 from the field, setting the school record for best field goal percentage in a game with a minimum of eight makes (.900). Gebers also added eight rebounds on the day.
Paige Frauendorfer had her third straight double-double and fourth this season, collecting 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also had a team-high six steals.
The Mavericks led by as many as 19 in the first half at 37-18 with 2:53 left. But the Chargers closed the gap with an 8-2 run to end the half at 39-26, in part due to their increased full-court pressure. Gebers had 12 points in the first half on a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, and the Mavs as a team shot 47.4 percent from the field.
The Chargers continued to press the Mavericks throughout the second half, and it caused UNO fits at times, but also resulted in some easy baskets after breaking the pressure. UNO's lead never slipped under 13 points after the break. When Briar Cliff did get the lead down to 13 at 47-34 with 16:22 left, UNO ran off an 8-2 run to push the lead to 55-36 with 11:15 remaining. The Mavs' top two scorers in the game - Frauendorfer and Gebers - had four points apiece in the run to spark the Mavs.
The Mavs' lead ballooned to as many as 20 at 61-41 with 3:20 to play. For the second straight game, UNO dominated the paint, this time with a 34-14 advantage. UNO forced 27 turnovers, but also turned it over 26 times. However, UNO still finished with a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Heather Pohl added nine points for the Mavericks, while
Rese Huddlin had six.
Jamie Nash finished with five points, five rebounds, eight assists and four steals.
The Mavericks return to the Sapp Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 7 for a 7 p.m. game against College of St. Mary.
