NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Alabama-Huntsville scored two goals in the third period and beat the UNO Mavericks 3-1 on Friday night. It was the Chargers' first win of the year.
The Mavericks are now 7-7-3 overall while UAH improved to 1-14-1. The series is being played at Bridgestone Arena, the home of the NHL's Nashville Predators. Game two is Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a game between the Predators and the Buffalo Sabres.
On the winning goal, Justin Cseter muscled the puck to the side of the UNO net. Goalie
Dayn Belfour made the first save but couldn't control the rebound. Mac Roy crashed the net and knocked the puck in to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.
Brice Geoffrion added an empty net goal, his second of the game, with four seconds remaining to seal the win.
Following a scoreless first period, the Chargers broke the ice just past the halfway mark of regulation. Doug Reid stole the puck along the right wing in the Mavericks' zone and threw a pass across to Brice Geoffrion who slipped home his first career goal.
UNO tied the game just 1:20 later when
Ryan Walters spotted
Michael Young creeping in from the left point. Young fired home his third goal of the year past sprawling goaltender Clarke Saunders.
The Mavericks outshot the Chargers 45-17. Saunders finished with 44 saves.
