OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's soccer team took 105 minutes and 30 shots to break through, but
Amber Bilodeau's overtime goal gave the Mavs a deserving 1-0 win over Washburn before 604 fans on senior day at the UNO Soccer Field.
Despite outshooting the Lady Blues 30-6 overall and 15-6 on goal, the Mavs couldn't muster the game-winning goal until just 5:39 remained in the second overtime period. That's when
Katie Pickinpaugh picked up the ball in the middle of the field and weaved her way through the midfield to the edge of the 18-yard box. She laid the ball off to the left side of the box, where Bilodeau received it and fired to the upper right corner of the goal to end the match. It was Bilodeau's second goal of the season.
UNO improved to 5-6-2 on the year with its second straight win. Washburn dropped to 1-12-3.
The Mavs controlled the game from the start, with senior forward
Hilary Jackson putting two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, one which Washburn goalkeeper Tori Fuglister just tipped over the crossbar. UNO continued to pour on the pressure in the half, with Jackson and Pickinpaugh forcing diving saves from Fuglister. But the Lady Blues' defense held strong despite 13 first-half shots from the Mavericks.
The action was quieter to begin the second half, but the Mavericks made a late push for the game-winner. Archuleta tested Wasbhurn goalie Mallorie Monhollan, who came on at halftime, from seven yards out, but Monhollan was up to the task. With just under two minutes left in the second half, Jackson shot from the right side of the box, but Monhollan snagged it. Jackson had a game-high nine shots with five hitting frame, and Archuleta and Pickinpaugh each had three shots on frame, but the Lady Blues' goalkeepers were stellar throughout the match in keeping the Mavs off the board.
Katelyn Tschida made six saves for UNO in earning her fourth shutout of the season, including a couple of key saves on close attempts by Washburn midway through the first half. The Mavs' back line turned up the pressure after halftime, allowing just two shots in the second half and one in overtime.
UNO finished with a decisive 11-1 advantage in corner kicks and had five shots in the first overtime period, but only one forced Monhollan to make a save. Bilodeau's goal capped UNO's season-high total of 30 shots.
The Mavs close the regular season on Friday at Northern Colorado at 5 p.m. (CT).
