Griffons Pull Away From Mavs, 71-63

Box Score

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Despite a career-high 17 points from freshman #Amanda Woodring and a double-double by Jamie Nash#, the UNO women's basketball team dropped an MIAA road game at Missouri Western on Sunday afternoon, 71-63.

The Mavericks fell to 1-5 in conference play and 4-6 overall. The Griffons, who are unbeaten in six home games at the MWSU Fieldhouse, moved to 4-2 against MIAA competition and 7-3 overall.

Missouri Western built up a 14-point lead with 3:28 left in the first half at 34-20, but the Mavs drew within striking distance at 36-30, thanks to a 10-2 run to close the half.

Trailing by nine points with 13:20 to play, the Mavs found energy off the bench from the freshman Woodring. Averaging 1.3 points per game coming into Sunday, Woodring hit back-to-back 3-pointers, then assisted on a Nash 3-pointer to tie the game at 45-45 with 12:23 remaining, a 9-0 UNO run in less than a minute.

After an old-fashioned 3-point play by Missouri Western's Rachel Luteyn, Woodring hit another 3-pointer to even the game back up at 48-48.

From then on, however, the Griffons would take control, outscoring UNO 16-8 over the next 5:57. Woodring hit her fourth 3-pointer of the half to draw UNO back within five at 64-59, but the Mavs would get no closer.

Woodring finished with her career-high 17 points on 5-of-6 from 3-point range. She had scored 12 points total in the first nine games of the season. Nash finished with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. #Heather Pohl# added 11 points for UNO.

The Mavs locked down on Missouri Western's All-MIAA performer Jessica Koch, holding the forward scoreless in the first half and limiting her to 10 points for the game. However, Koch shared the ball well with her teammates, recording 11 assists to help four Griffons score in double-figures. Leading the way was Luteyn, who scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

UNO plays two more games this week. On Wednesday, Truman visits Sapp Fieldhouse for a 5:30 p.m. game, and on Saturday the Mavs travel to face Central Missouri at 1:30 p.m.
