DES MOINES, Iowa – The UNO track and field team broke a seven-year old meet record in winning the 1600 meter sprint medley relay on Saturday at the Drake Relays. The time posted by the Mavericks was the second-best in the event among all colleges and universities.
The team of #Shannon Moore#, #Maja Mihalinec#, #Pinar Saka and Anja Puc# ran a time of 3:49.11. The event features two 200 meter legs, one 400 meter segment and one 800 meter leg. The Mavs easily outdistanced runner up Oklahoma Baptist which took second in the college division race with a time of 3:59.35.
The best time of the day in the event was posted by Division I Tulsa in a time of 3:47.44, less than two seconds faster than UNO.
The previous record for the 1600 meter sprint relay at the prestigious event was 3:50.60 set by Lincoln University in 2003.
UNO's same quartet of Moore, Mihalinec, Saka and Puc set a school record and took second overall in the 4 x 400 meter relay in the college division with a time of 3:41.20. Lincoln took first in the event, less than three seconds faster at 3:38.55.
In one individual event on Friday, Puc finished fourth in a combined 800 meter field featuring university and college division runners. She posted a time of 2:07.55. It's the top time in the MIAA this season pending all results from meets this weekend and it was only two seconds off her school record.
In other track and field action this weekend, the Mavericks competed in the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
In the hammer throw, #Madison Haugland# set a personal best for the second straight week. She posted a throw of 154 feet, one inch, smashing her previous PR of 146-2. Her new mark qualifies her for the NCAA outdoor championship meet.
#Sami Spenner# also set a new personal best, posting a jump of 37 feet, one inch in the triple jump.
#Nicole Behm#, running the 3000 meter steeplechase for the first time in her career, posted a time of 12:05.23. Her time already puts her in the top ten in the MIAA pending full results of this weekend's action.
Next week, the Mavericks will travel to Kansas State for the Ward Haylett Invitational. The Mavs also will compete in the MIAA Heptathlon-Decathlon Championship at Missouri Southern.
