OMAHA, Neb.-The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team improved to 27-9 on the season as they hosted a non-conference doubleheader against No. 23 Augustana College at Claussen-Westgate Field on Sunday. The Mavericks improved to 6-0 at home as they swept the series against the Vikings, winning by scores of 3-2 and 7-6 (8 innings).
Starting slow in game one, sophomore pitcher #
Beth Haley gave up two earned runs on five hits before senior Melissa Negrete# relieved her in the second inning.
Negrete was brilliant in relief, striking out five batters, while allowing only two hits and no runs.
Junior #
Lindsey Slocum led the offense with two RBI and two hits. Shortstop Molly Feichtinger# added two more hits, while Augustana's defense committed three errors allowing two unearned runs.
Viking pitcher Ashley Meyer (9-3) gave up seven hits in the loss, but struck out four and allowed only one earned run.
On the mound in game two, Slocum had a rough start, giving up 2 solo home runs and six hits in just less than two innings, before being replaced by Negrete.
In relief of Slocum, Negrete struggled in game two, giving up three earned runs on eight hits in four innings pitched. Haley finished the game for UNO, allowing only one hit and no runs in the final two innings.
Error-plagued throughout the day, the Vikings committed four more in game two, leading to a two-run third inning for the Mavericks. Augustana also threw three pitchers in game two, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.
Catcher #
Kristi Meneely# led the Maverick offense with three RBI and three hits, while #
Kristin Wellwood# and Feichtinger combined for another four hits.
Trailing 6-5 in the seventh inning, junior #
Emma Wright# hit a game-tying single with two outs off of Augustana's Chelsey Durland, sending the game to an extra inning.
In the eighth, Haley and the defense held ground, leading to a game-winning single by Wellwood in the bottom half of the eighth. Haley improved her record to 11-2 on the season, while Durland (6-3) and the Vikings fell to 26-6 on the season.
The Mavs will now host Northwest Missouri State, facing the Bearcats in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
