Mavericks Fend Off Bearcats at Home, 81-77

OMAHA, Neb. – #Heather Pohl# had eleven of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the UNO women's basketball team to an 81-77 win over Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.  With the win, the Mavericks earned a split of the season series with the Bearcats and improved to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The win spoiled a big night for Omaha native and Bearcat guard Abby Henry who led all scorers with 31 points.

The Mavericks got off to a strong start and led by as much as 12 points with 10:48 to go in the first half.  #Ashley Nelson# led the way for UNO with a dozen points in the first half.

Henry led the charge back with 21 points in the half.  She hit two free throws with 39 seconds left to put the Bearcats up, 38-36.

After a layup by Nelson, Candace Boeh hit a falling jumper at the buzzer to give Northwest a 40-38 lead at halftime.

UNO retook the lead in the second half on a three-pointer by Pohl with less than three minutes gone.  From there, the Mavericks built several leads, none bigger than five as the Bearcats stayed close thanks to Henry and Gabby Curtis who had eleven points in the second stanza.

Northwest got a short-lived lead with 1:35 to go when Gentry Dietz hit a layup to make it 75-74.

But #Paige Frauendorfer# responded on the next possession with a jumper to restore the lead and then hit two more free throws to extend the Mavs' lead to 79-75 with 17 seconds remaining.

Alexis Boeh hit a layup with four seconds to go to get the Bearcats back to within two points, but #Jamie Nash# iced the game with two free throws with 1.9 seconds on the clock.

Frauendorfer and #Alyssa Green# each had 13 for UNO while Nelson had 12.  #Kiley Herold# led the Mavs with seven rebounds.

Curtis had a double-double for the Bearcats with 18 points and eleven rebounds.  The Bearcats dropped to 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA.
