HAYS, Kan. - The UNO women's basketball team ran into strong bench play from Fort Hays State and dropped its second MIAA Conference game of the season on Friday night, falling 76-70 to the Lady Tigers.
Fort Hays State, capitalizing off a 41-15 advantage in bench points, improved to 5-1 (2-0 MIAA). The Mavericks fell to 3-3 (0-2 MIAA), while suffering their second conference loss in Kansas this week.
Heather Pohl led UNO with 21 points and seven rebounds, and the Mavs were a perfect 11-of-11 on free throws, but they were unable to find an answer on the defensive end for Fort Hays State's Kimber Weiser.
Weiser came off the bench to score 21 points, including 12-of-14 on free throws. Rhys Pihl also came off the bench to chip in 10 points in just 12 minutes of play. Shelby Hillman added eight off the bench.
Fort Hays State led throughout the first 10:12 of the contest, but UNO went on a 15-2 run to turn a 14-8 deficit into a 23-16 lead with 6:22 left in the first half. The Mavs led by two, 34-32, at halftime.
In the second half, Weiser hit two free throws with 14:13 to play to give the Lady Tigers a 43-42 lead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. Fort Hays State led by as many as 10 points, and the closest UNO could get down the stretch was down by four on a three-pointer by
Jamie Nash with three seconds left.
Jessica Zaruba scored 12 points, and Nash added 10 for UNO.
The Mavs have one more conference game on the road before they get a home game. UNO plays at No. 10 Emporia State on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard on 90.7 FM KVNO.
