Mavs Fall to NWMSU, 90-77

The UNO women's basketball team dropped a 90-77 loss to Northwest Missouri State on Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the defeat, UNO is 3-5 (0-4 MIAA), while NWMSU improves to 6-2 (2-2 MIAA).

The Mavericks were led by four players scoring in double figures – Heather Pohl (16), Jamie Nash (15), Jessica Zaruba (14) and Paige Frauendorfer (13). Pohl and Jordan Spencer led the way on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds apiece, while Nash also dished out seven assists.

The Bearcats were topped by Abby Henry, who finished with 33 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the field and a 9-for-13 performance at the free throw line. Shelly Martin (14), Gabby Curtis (13) and Tara Roach (11) also rounded out NWMSU's offensive leaders, with Roach adding 10 rebounds. Defensively, Kyla Roehrig was a tough match inside, pulling down 14 boards while adding eight points and three blocks.

Northwest Missouri State was solid from long range in the first half, shooting 71 percent, before finishing the night with a 53 percent performance from behind the arc. Two Bearcats shot in double figures for the first stanza – Abby Henry (18) and Shelly Martin (12), who was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.

The first half started with UNO and NWMSU locked in a 13-13 tie, eventually broken by a jumper and a 3-pointer by the Bearcats' Abby Henry. Northwest took it out to a nine-point lead, but the Mavs responded with four consecutive treys, including back-to-back shots by Jamie Nash, to bring it to 35-32. NWMSU then used five points by Shelly Martin and another three by Henry to take a 45-34 advantage heading into the locker room.

Henry remained a force to be dealt with in the second half, totaling 15 points. UNO was led by Frauendorfer, who had 11 second-half points, and Sara Reeves, who had eight points, highlighted by a pair of threes.

Northwest worked out to a 20-point lead before UNO cut it to single digits at 84-75 with just over a minute remaining. A final 6-2 run, however, gave NWMSU the 90-77 win.

UNO returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 18, hosting Lincoln. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Sapp Fieldhouse.
