TOPEKA, Kan. - The UNO women's basketball team took the No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues down to the wire on their home court Wednesday night, but the Mavericks fell just short of pulling off the upset, falling 69-64 at Lee Arena.
UNO trailed by five at halftime, but opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 42-39 lead with 15:33 to play. The Mavs and Lady Blues battled evenly throughout most of the second half, and UNO held a 62-61 lead with 2:52 to play. But Washburn's Megan Lassley and Alyssa Mullen hit 3-pointers down the stretch, while the Mavs went 0-of-4 from the field in the last two minutes.
The Mavs dropped to 3-2 (0-1 MIAA), while Washburn moved to 5-0 (1-0 MIAA). #
Paige Frauendorfer# scored a career-high 22 points for the Mavs, and also pulled down seven rebounds. #
Jamie Nash# added a career-high 18 points, and #
Heather Pohl# chipped in 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds in defeat.
UNO trailed by as many as nine points, 37-28, with 1:36 to play in the first half, but Frauendorfer hit two free throws and
Lauren Andrews made a layup to close the half down just five points, 37-32.
Out of the halftime gate, Pohl hit a jumper, and Frauendorfer connected on a jumper, then scored a put-back off of an offensive rebound to put UNO ahead 38-37.
Washburn pulled back in front, however, 54-50, with 9:20 to play on a layup by Cassie Lombardino. But the Mavs chipped away, and eventually reclaimed the lead at 58-57 with 5:38 to play when #
Jasamine Reeves# hit two free throws. UNO wouldn't surrender the lead until Lassley hit a long 3-pointer with 2:21 left to put the Lady Blues up 64-62. Frauendorfer scored to tie the game at 64-64, but then Mullen hit her second 3-pointer of the game to put Washburn up for good at 67-64 with 1:34 to play.
Laura Kinderknecht led the Lady Blues with 17 points. Mullen had 15 and Lassley scored 13. Washburn shot 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from behind the arc, while UNO connected on 2-of-12 3-pointers (16.7 percent).
