OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO's men's tennis team played in five events during the fall season that included head-to-head match ups with five different schools as well as three opens.
The Mavericks opened the season on Sep. 3, at the Robert Baird Open in Omaha. Senior #Drew Mercier# came out the champion in men's singles defeating Nebraska Kearney's Josh Raymond, 6-4, 6-2.
One week later, the Mavs beat the Hastings College Broncos, 5-4 at the Koch Family Tennis Center. The team of Mercier and #Matt Frost# won the number one doubles match, beating Brian Freeman and Vinny Banda, 8-1.
On the singles side, the Mavs took the first three matches. Mercier won the number one match, beating Tyler Benson, 6-4, 6-1. Frost topped Banda in the number two match, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), and #Anthony Forcucci# turned back Seaton Bachle, 6-4, 6-2. In the number five singles match, UNO's #Andrew Lescelius# beat Hastings' Andrew Huber, 6-3, 6-4.
On Sept. 21, the Mavericks faced Concordia University of Nebraska, winning 7-2. They swept the doubles matches and won the first four singles matches. Frost won at number one singles, beating Jonathan Schleicher, 6-0, 7-5. #Eric McKnight# took number two singles over Jeremy Jank, 6-1, 6-2. Forcucci won number three singles over Scott Schlesinger, 6-0, 6-0, and Brandon Otoski won at number four over Cole Egger, 6-2, 6-2.
A week later, the Mavericks traveled to west to face the Colorado-based schools of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In the opener, UNO dropped a 6-3 decision to Metro State, getting wins in number one and two doubles and in number four singles. Mercier and Frost topped Metro's Lucio Cangiano and Adrien Delvaux, 8-5, and McKnight and Forcucci beat Ross Gelina and Ryan Campbell, 9-7. Forcucci took the singles match over Campbell, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Later that day, the Mavs bounced back for a 9-0 win over Colorado Christian. The match featured wins in singles and doubles for Mercier, McKnight, Forcucci, #Mike Hupf# and Otoski.
On day two, the Mavericks lost to Mesa State, 7-2. Frost and Mercier won number one doubles over Jaco Gerbrands and Joseph Aragon, 8-4 and Hupf and Otoski won the number three doubles match over Jonathan Casson and Alex Barrios, 9-7.
In the finale of the trip, UNO beat Colorado State Pueblo, 6-2. The Mavs swept the doubles and got wins from Mercier in number one singles and from Frost in number two singles.
The Mavericks competed in the International Tennis Association Regional in Maryville, Mo. Mercier defeated teammates Otoski and McKnight to qualify for the men's open singles semifinals. He then stopped Joerg Barthel, 6-2, 6-2, before topping Joshua Raymond, 6-4, 6-2 in the final. In the consolation draw, Frost made it to the final before losing to Eric Binkley, 6-1, 6-3.
On Oct. 2 the Mavericks competed in the Omaha Collegiate Invite where the team played a number of matches against their teammates in final draws. Otoski defeated Hupf 6-3, 6-4 in singles play. #John Wrobel defeated Ryan Robertson# 7-6, 6-1 in singles. #Ben Williams# defeated Dylan Vonbank of South Dakota State, 6-1, 6-0.
In Flight A of doubles play, Otoski and Hopf defeated teammates Lescelius and #Peter Greteman#, 8-1. In Flight B doubles, Wrobel and Williams defeated #Ryan Schmidt# and Robertson, 8-3.
The Mavericks begin the spring season when they host Nebraska Wesleyan on Feb. 4 at the Hanscom Park Tennis Center.
