OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks led nearly the entire game, including all of the second half, as they defeated Missouri Western, 59-51 Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Nebraska-Omaha improved to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA while the Griffons dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Alyssa Green led UNO with 15 points and
Heather Pohl added 12. Pohl and
Jessica Zaruba were each just shy of double-doubles. Pohl had nine rebounds while Zaruba led UNO with 10 rebounds and she had nine points.
Ashley Nelson had nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Both teams shot poorly in the game. The Mavs had a .311 field goal percentage while MWSU was .268 from the field. The Griffons did hit 7-of-15 3-pointers to go 47 percent while UNO was just 17 percent. The Mavs were 71 percent from the free throw line.
The Mavericks were up by seven, 26-19 at halftime and then they quickly built the lead to 11 on a 3-pointer by Zaruba. An 8-0 run then brought the Griffons within three points with 16:17 left.
UNO kept control and pushed it to 10 points on a free throw by Green at 6:01 before the Griffons gave it one more run.
Lauren Nolke hit a 3-pointer with 57 seconds left ended a 6-0 run that pulled MWSU within six points. Zaruba and Green then each made a pair of free throws to hold on for UNO.
Nolke led the Griffons with 16 points after a 4-of-6 performance from 3-point range.
