KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Redshirt freshman Nicole Baier hadn't scored a point in her UNO career heading into Friday's match with Central Oklahoma. The Maverick forward ended that drought and erupted with three goals and two assists, and more importantly led UNO to its first win of the 2009 season, 5-2 over Central Oklahoma. It was the first match of the four-team Truman Labor Day Classic.
Baier's netted her first goal of the game at 5:57 of the first half to put UNO up 1-0. It was the only goal of the half. The Mavs out shot the Bronchos 12-3 in the first.
Jessica Powers scored at the 47:59 mark of the second period on a pass from Baier to put UNO up 2-0. Baier added her second goal of the match in the 61st minute. Melanie Petersen assisted on the goal.
UCO finally got on the board at the 63rd minute on Brittni Walker header-shot off a corner kick.
Powers scored her second goal at 66:42 of the second period to increase UNO's lead to 4-1. Baier added her second assist of the game on the Powers goal.
Baier scored her third goal for the hat trick at the 75:13 mark of the second half to put the Mavericks up 5-1. Stephanie Sackett assisted on the goal.
The Bronchos scored their second goal at 82nd minute mark off a Katy Kashwer goal.
UNO goalkeepers Elizabeth Odorisio and Lauren Fox each played a half in net. Odorisio started the game and earned her first win in net of the season. Both had one save each. Fox allowed both UCO goals.
UNO out shot UCO 22-9, while the Bronchos had the 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Mavericks will be back on the field Sunday when they face 23-ranked St. Edward's in their final match of the Truman Labor Day Classic. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. at the Truman Soccer Pitch.
