MARYVILLE, Mo. - #Cayla Hargrove# had a career-high 32 points but it wasn't enough to lift the UNO women's basketball team as the Mavericks fell 102-96 in double overtime to Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday night. UNO had a nine-point lead at half-time but couldn't hold off a Bearcat team that had won just two games in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association before the game.
The Mavericks are now 9-10 and 5-8 in the MIAA.
Hargrove had 16 of her points in the first half as the Mavs built a 42-33 lead. No other Maverick had more than five points, but UNO still shot almost 52 percent in the stanza.
In the second half, the Bearcats began to claw their way back into the game led by Jessica Burton who had 24 points in the second half and overtime. Still, the Mavs had a four-point lead with 1:13 remaining in the game when Hargrove completed a traditional three-point play to make it 77-73.
But Micaela Uriel sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a layup by #Jill Wolf# in the waning seconds, the last with 27 seconds remaining to tie the game at 79 and send it to overtime.
In the first extra frame, the Mavs led by as many as three, and the Bearcats were ahead by as many as five. Burton hit two clutch free throws with 34 seconds remaining to make it 89-89 and force the second overtime.
Northwest grabbed the final lead when Meghan Brue hit a three pointer with 3:05 to go. The Bearcats sealed the win with free throws down the stretch.
Hargrove's point total was also a team season-high. She also led the team with 12 rebounds. #Amanda Brodsack# had 15 points, and #Kamillia Brown# added 11. Burton led the Bearcats with 32 points while Brue had 26.
The Mavericks return home to host the fourth-ranked Emporia State University Hornets on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
