Scarpello Gets 400th Win as Mavericks Split a Pair

Abilene Christian Box Score
St. Edward's Box Score

DURANT, Okla. - The Mavericks fell 10-2 against Abilene in the first game Saturday but won 11-1 against third-ranked St. Edward's in the final game to give head coach Jeanne Scarpello her 400th career win in her 10th season at Nebraska-Omaha. Both games were shortened by the run rule to five innings.

The Mavericks (3-1) will wrap up their season-opening weekend in the Southeastern Oklahoma State South Central Shootout Sunday with a 10 a.m. game against St. Mary's and a noon game against the host school.

Scarpello is now 400-123-1 (.764), becoming the second coach in UNO history to reach 400 wins.

Kristin Wellwood hit a grand slam in the Mavericks' nine-run fourth inning against St. Edwards. Amanda Bader and Katelyn Hinton also hit two-run shots in that inning. The Mavericks had 14 plate appearances in that inning and got nine hits. Wellwood and Bader each had two hits in the inning.

Hinton was 3 for 3 in the game and Wellwood was 2 for 3. Hinton led off the game with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Slocum. UNO added another run in the third when Ashley Lynch walked and later scored on an error.

Beth Haley got the win for the Mavericks as she allowed one run in the third inning before UNO's nine-run fifth forced the run rule. She gave up seven hits as she improved to 2-0.

Down 3-0 in the fifth inning of game one against ACU, two straight Mavericks reached on errors and then Hinton drove them in with a single for UNO's only runs.

That turned out to be UNO's last inning as Melissa Negrete, who started the game, gave up five runs in the fifth inning before being taken out. She allowed eight runs total on six hits and three walks. Only four of the runs were earned as the team committed five errors.

The Mavs had just three hits in that game.
