BOLIVAR, Mo. - The UNO women's basketball team won its fifth straight game, edging the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats 81-77 on Saturday night. #LaToya Wright# had a game-high 24 points for the Mavericks who improved to 14-10 and 10-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
#Cayla Hargrove added 17 points while Ashley Nelson# had 10. #Amanda Brodsack# had eight points and 12 rebounds before fouling out. The Mavericks are a season-best four games above .500. They won both games of the two game season series.
UNO built a 13-point lead late in the first half, but the Bearcats closed the gap to 34-28 at the break.
The Mavericks maintained the lead for much of the second half, but Southwest Baptist battled back led by Courtney Creed and Rachel Graves. Creed had a team-high 20 points while Graves chipped in 18.
With 8:30 remaining and the game tied at 51, Hargrove put the Mavericks in the lead for good, nailing a three pointer and following with a layup to make it 56-51.
Hargrove hit another three with 1:29 to go to push the UNO lead back to eight at 77-69.
UNO shot better than 48 percent from the floor while holding the Bearcats to less than 39 percent shooting.
The Mavericks return to action for the final week of MIAA action when they visit the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Joplin, Mo.
