DURANT, Okla. - A run in the top of the first inning was all the Mavericks needed as they defeated No. 21 Angelo State, 1-0 Friday morning in the Southeastern Oklahoma State South Central Shootout to open the season.
Nebraska-Omaha (1-0) will continue action in the tournament with a 2 p.m. game against Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday and then play two more Saturday and Sunday.
Katelyn Hinton singled to lead off the game and then
Molly Feichtinger moved her to second base with a sacrifice bunt.
Treightin Yates then drove her in with a double to center field.
Melissa Negrete got the opening-day start in the circle and threw a four-hit shutout. She struck out seven batters and walked three.
The Rambelles threatened to tie the score in the fifth inning. Sarah DeMoss singled and then stole second to start the inning. Sandy James later singled and DeMoss was thrown out at home by center fielder
Lindsey Slocum as she tried to score on the hit.
ASU also had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning but Negrete got a strikeout to end the game.
The Mavericks notched three hits against ASU with Hinton, Yates and
Ashley Lynch getting them.
