A pair of NCAA II opponents will await the Mavericks as they play their first games on the road this year at the Central Missouri Jennies Classic. Friday they'll play Minnesota Duluth at 12:30 p.m. and Saturday they'll take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 12:00 p.m.
Nebraska-Omaha enters the match at 1-0 after defeating Dana, 88-54 in the season-opener Sunday. The Bulldogs are 1-1 after win against Minot State and a loss to No. 1 Michigan Tech. The Javelinas are 1-0 with a win against East Central. They'll play Friday against Central Missouri before taking on the Mavericks. UMD will face UCM Saturday.
Sophomore forward
Heather Pohl led the Mavericks with 22 points Sunday against Dana. For the Bulldogs, it was no surprise that senior forward Jheri Booker has led them in scoring in their two games. Last year's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defensive player of the year has averaged 22.5 points a game after getting 30 and 15 this year. Booker scored 15.3 a game last year. Senior guard Felicia Soza led TAMUK with 19 points in her opener this year.
The Mavericks are 4-6 all-time against UMD and they swept the Bulldogs in 2007-08, the final year the two played in the North Central Conference. UNO and TAMUK will meet for the first time in history.

The Coaches
UNO head coach Patty Patton Shearer is 83-61 (.576) as she starts her sixth season with the Mavericks. She is also beginning her 10th year overall as a head coach with a 143-110 (.565) record. She is the school's leader in career winning percentage. Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. She played one year for the Bears after playing two years at Northern Arizona. Patton Shearer coached for four seasons at Fort Lewis before coming to UNO.
Minnesota Duluth coach Annette Wiles is in her second season with the Bulldogs after spending eight years at Fort Hays State. Wiles is 17-12 (.586) at UMD and 317-153 (.674) in her 17th season as a head coach. She went 136-92 at FHSU and 164-49 at Bethany. Wiles earned her bachelor's from FHSU and helped lead the Tigers to an NAIA national title in 1990-91, her senior year. The two-time All-American was selected to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference all-time basketball team.
TAMUK coach Scott Hyland has ties to Omaha. He was a graduate assistant on the men's team at UNO where he earned a master's degree in 1993. He also worked at College of St. Mary, Omaha Central High School and as a men's assistant at Dana.
Hyland is in his third season with the Javelinas with a 23-31 (.426) record. He's a 1990 graduate of Mary (N.D.).
The Series
- Minnesota Duluth holds a 6-4 advantage over UNO.
- The two teams played together in the final four seasons of the North Central Conference from 2004-05 to 2007-08. The teams were 4-4 against each other in those games with UNO winning the final two in the series.
- The Bulldogs won a pair of non-conference games prior to joining the NCC.
- The two have never played in overtime.
- The Mavericks have never faced Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Green Joins 1,000 Point Club After First Game
Maverick senior guard
Alyssa Green's third free throw Sunday against Dana was her 1,000th career point at UNO and she ended up scoring 12 in the Mavericks' win. She now has 1,009 points in her fourth season to put her 21st in school history.
Green's already ninth in career 3-pointers with 79 and she needs six to tie for eighth. She's also eighth with 279 career assists, just 10 shy of seventh all-time.
Green scored 11 points in UNO's exhibition at Creighton on November 5. She was 4-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She did not shoot a 3-pointer.
This is the second straight year the Mavericks have had a new member of the 1,000 point club. Last year
Cayla Hargrove joined the elite group and she ended her career 15th with 1,106 points.
Green has started 82 of 85 matches in her career at UNO and she's averaging 11.9 points a game. She came to UNO from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she scored more than 1,000 career points.
Pohl Starting Sophomore Season Strong
Sophomore forward
Heather Pohl played in every game last year and averaged 1.6 points with no starts. She never scored more than nine points in a game. She started Sunday against Dana and on November 5 at Creighton and she led the Mavs in scoring both games.
She was 9-for-14 from the field for 22 points against Dana and she scored 21 points off a strong shooting performance against the Bluejays. She was 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Pohl scored 1,000 career points at Omaha's Millard West High School where she earned first team all-state and was a McDonald's All-America nominee.
Steals Pay Off For Mavs
The Mavericks led the MIAA in steals last year with 11.00 per game and they were the only team to average in double figures. They stole the ball 10 or more times in 18 of 27 games last year and they out-stole their opponents in every game but six.
They had 14 steals against Dana while the Vikings had 10. Freshman guard
Jamie Nash had five steals and senior forward
Alyssa Green had three.
Herold Stays Close To Home, Real Close To Family

Kiley Herold is not only staying close to home by going to UNO. She's also staying really close to family. Her father,
Bob Herold is the UNO baseball coach.
Kiley Herold scored in double figures off the bench with 12 points Sunday against Dana. She was 5-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. She graduated from Omaha's Millard North High School last year and earned all-Metro honors her final two years. Her senior year she was an all-state selection. November 5 at Creighton she scored five points with two rebounds before fouling out.
Bob Herold will begin his 11th season at UNO this spring. He has guided UNO to a 341-204-2 record and five straight trips to the NCAA tournament.
Rinehart Strong In Return
Senior forward
Kylee Rinehart played in her first game Sunday since missing all of last year with an injury. She had a team-high 10 rebounds with six points off 2-of-3 shooting. She also had four assists.
Rinehart played in 19 games for UNO in 2007-08 and averaged 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 8.6 minutes a game. She played her first two seasons at Casper College.
Both Preseason Polls Pick UNO Women Seventh
The league coaches and media both picked the UNO women's basketball team to finish seventh in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association as the league released its preseason polls at its yearly media day October 27.
Defending regular season champion Emporia State was the top choice in both polls. The Hornets got 96 points and seven first-place votes from the coaches and 291 points and 15 first-place votes from the media.
UNO got 47 points from the coaches and trailed No. 6 Missouri Southern by four points. In the media poll, the Mavericks earned 138 points and trailed No. 6 Fort Hays State by 20 points.
Mavericks Playing 40th Season Of Basketball
- The start of the 2009-10 season will mark the 40th season of women's basketball at UNO.
- The program started in 1970-71 but win-loss records are not available until the 1971-72 season.
In those last 39 years, the Mavericks have gone 523-478 (.522) in 1,001 games.
- There have been 19 winning seasons and 23 seasons with at least a .500 record.
- The Mavericks have three North Central Conference championships in their history (1980, 1981, 1982) and they have been to the NCAA tournament three times (1982, 1987, 1992). They went to the AIAW tournament four times.
Coming Up
The Mavericks will return home to host the UNO Thanksgiving Classic, November 27-28 at Sapp Fieldhouse. Friday, November 28, they will play Oklahoma Panhandle State at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 29, they will play Chadron State at 3:30 p.m. The other two games in the classic will be Southwest Minnesota State against CSC at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and SMSU against OPSU at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
