OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team defeated Missouri Southern State University 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.
Senior #Amanda Iwansky# got the Mavericks (4-1, 2-1 MIAA) off to quick start scoring a goal just 1:20 into the match. Iwanksky intercepted a Missouri Southern pass and unloaded a shot on goal past Lions goalkeeper Randi Russell in the lower left corner.
The Lions (2-5, 0-4 MIAA) came back just minutes later to tie the match at 1-1 on Sarah Evers' goal in the 4th minute.
UNO responded back when senior #MaryClaire Murnan# put the Mavericks on top for good when she stole a Missouri Southern pass and got by the charging goalkeeper for an empty net in the 30th minute.
Freshman Hilary Horvatic scored her first career goal when she intercepted a clear out attempt by the Missouri Southern defense and delivered a shot at the top of the goalie's box that beat Russell.
UNO added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when freshman #Becca Swanson# netted her second goal this year on a lob shot just out of the reach of Russell.
The Mavericks out-shot the Lions 24-3 in the match as they were the aggressors for the majority of play.
Fifth-ranked UNO will be back in action next Saturday when they play host to MIAA foe No. 10 Truman State (6-0, 2-0 MIAA) at the UNO Soccer Field. The Mavericks and Bulldogs will kickoff at 1 p.m.
