Emporia, Kan. - The UNO women's basketball team got into an early hole and never recovered, losing to the ninth ranked Emporia State Hornets 85-67 on Wednesday night at WL White Auditorium. #Alyssa Green# led the Mavericks with 16 points.
The Hornets raced out to a 41-23 lead at the end of the first half led by 13 points from Cassondra Boston. She answered a layup by Green with three seconds left with a three-pointer at the buzzer to put ESU comfortably in front. No Maverick had more than 4 points in the first half.
In the second half, the Mavericks played even with the Hornets as each team managed 44 points. Green had 12 of her points in the frame. #Cayla Hargrove# added 11 points for UNO. Four Hornets finished with double digit point totals led by Boston's 22. Ida Edwards chipped in 16, and Andrea Leiker and Sophia Lenard had 15 each.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in MIAA play. They return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3 when they visit Missouri Western. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
