TOPEKA, Kan. - The Maverick women's basketball team lost its first game in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, 61-52 to Washburn University on Wednesday night. The loss, to the second-ranked team in the country, drops the Mavs to 1-3 on the season.
Defense dominated the first half as the Mavericks held the Lady Blues scoreless for almost the first six minutes of the game. The Mavs led 6-0 before Washburn went on a 12-0 run to take the lead. The game stayed close in the first half as the Lady Blues took a 23-19 lead at the break. Senior #Amanda Brodsack# led the way in the first half with 6 points and 3 rebounds for the Mavs.
In the second half, Washburn kept the Mavericks at arm's length. UNO got as close as one point three times, first on a jumper by junior #Alyssa Green# with 11:58 to go and finally on another Green shot with 6:29 to go that made it 44-43. But Washburn's Janice Bright answered with a three-pointer, and the Mavericks would never get closer than three points again.
Green led the Mavericks with 18 points while Brodsack had 13. Stenecia Graham led all scorers with 20 points for Washburn.
The Mavericks continue their Kansas road trip on Friday, Dec. 5 when they visit the Fort Hays State Tigers for a 5:30 p.m. start.
