EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team used two goals in the first eight minutes of the match to defeat Emporia State 2-0 at Two Rivers Youth Soccer Association Complex. Freshman #Danielle Cheney scored her first career goal and fellow freshman Jerica Kuncl# added a goal and an assist to lead the Mavericks to victory.
Cheney's first career goal came just 50 seconds into the match when she unloaded a shot on a goal from Kuncl that beat Hornet goalkeeper Jennifer Stillmock. The Mavericks (7-2-0, 5-2-0 MIAA) added another goal in the 8th minute when Kuncl found the back of the net on a shot that curved past Stillmock in the lower left corner. Senior #MaryClaire Murnan# was credited with the assist.
Not only did the Mavericks record their fifth shutout of the season, they did it in dominant fashion, holding the Hornets (3-8-0, 1-5-0 MIAA) to just one shot on goal in the match.
The Maverick offense would dominate the majority of the time, outshooting the Hornets 24-8, including a 14-1 edge after the first 45 minutes.
Kuncl made the most out of her first career start, unleashing eight shots, three on goal.
UNO will wrap up its four-game road trip Saturday as it travels to Topeka, Kan. to face MIAA foe Washburn (7-5-1, 3-4-0 MIAA). Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
