MARYVILLE, Mo. – The fourth-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team was upset Saturday afternoon by Northwest Missouri State 2-1 at the Bearcat Pitch in MIAA action.
The Bearcats improved to 7-3-1 and 3-3-1 in the MIAA with the victory, while the Mavericks dropped to 6-2-0 and 4-2-0 in the MIAA. With the win, Northwest Missouri State posts its first victory over UNO. The Bearcats had been 0-5 in the previous meetings with the UNO.
The Bearcats struck first off a corner kick in the 19th minute when Andrea Tritz crossed the ball to Andrea Deml who headed it to Rikki Southard who put a shot on goal that got by sophomore goalkeeper #Lauren Fox# for the early 1-0 lead.
UNO was able to answer back and tie the match at one apiece when junior #Megan Jensen# was tackled hard in the box in the 32nd minute leading to a penalty kick she converted.
Northwest Missouri State regained the lead for good when Kelsey Sanders broke free down the left sideline and unleashed a shot that beat Fox in the lower right corner.
UNO had opporutnies to tie the match in the second half with six corner kicks but were unable to translate that into goals, despite several great crosses from junior #Lindsey Nealon#.
The match was physical from start-to-finish and featured two yellow cards, one for each team.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back with a pair of road contests next week against Emporia State on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. and Washburn at 6 p.m on Oct. 11.
